The newest bridge in the Firth of Forth, the Queensferry Crossing, opened in 2017, some 10 years after its initial approval. Designed to be of motorway format, not accommodating pedestrians, it is currently believed that it will carry all commercial and road car traffic with public transport vehicles, buses, green road cars, bikes and pedestrians continuing to use the existing bridge. Each of the three spans will be 650m in length with the pillars being 207m high, making them some 50m taller than the existing road bridge. The pillars will be constructed over 2012-13 with the caissons having 16 000 cubic metres of concrete and being to a depth of 14m below sea level.
The construction of the new crossing will be eagerly followed by bridge enthusiasts around the world and once built, the sight of the three magnificent bridges will add to the already spectacular locations of North and South Queensferry, with each bridge bringing its own impressive size, design and sheer wow factor! They will complete a trio of unique bridges covering three centuries of Man’s design, engineering and construction prowess.
